Microsoft Silverlight, A competitor for Adobe Flash

Microsoft Silverlight

A Competitor for Adobe Flash from Micrsoft

Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of Microsoft .NET–based media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web.

http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/

http://silverlight.net/

Microsoft Silverlight (code-named Windows Presentation Foundation/Everywhere or WPF/E) is a proprietary runtime for browser-based Rich Internet Applications, providing a subset of the animation, vector graphics, and video playback capabilities of Windows Presentation Foundation. Version 1.1 also includes a complete version of the .NET Common Language Runtime, named CoreCLR,so that Silverlight applications can be written in any .NET language.

The latest release is version 1.0 beta, with an alpha release of version 1.1 made available as well. The runtime is available for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista and Mac OS X 10.4, with browser plugins available for Internet Explorer 6.0/7.0, Firefox 1.5/2.0 and Safari 2.0; Opera is not supported in the current releases but will be supported with future builds,as will be Windows 2000.Additional platforms are being considered as well.

Silverlight aims to compete with Adobe Flash and the presentation components of Ajax. It also competes with Sun Microsystems' JavaFX, which was launched a few days after Silverlight. The first CTP of Silverlight was released in December 2006. Microsoft aims to have a final release by mid-2007. An unattributed report claimed that Microsoft aims to release certain parts of Silverlight source code as open source software, but the claim has been denied by Microsoft. Sam Ramji, Microsoft director of platform technology strategy, said Microsoft has no plans to open source Silverlight. However, portions of the Dynamic Language Runtime, included with Silverlight, have been made available on Microsoft's CodePlex website using the Microsoft Permissive License.

PhotoShop Smoke Effect Tutorial

Simple PhotoShop - Smoke Effect Tutorial

Here you can make some very cool smoke with just a simple filter effect. I havnt seen a tut like this on the internet yet so I thought I had better post one. But anyway I find it a very useful method, I use it quite a bit.

  1. Step one, open a new image, it doesnt really matter what size but be sure to set your background color to black. (this effect generally looks its best on a black background.) Make a new layer and select the \"Polygonal lasso tool\" and create an abstract shape that looks similar to the example below.(It doesnt really matter what color you use here either, but just dont make it too dark, and feel free to experiment.)Photoshop Smock Tutorial

  2. Now we can start our highlights of our smoke. Select the \"Dodge\" tool and make the brush size around \"50\" and the \"Range\" to \"highlights.\" Now use this tool around the edges and corners of your shape. Next, select the \"Burn tool\" and use it in the middle and wherever you see fit. You should have something that looks like this:

    Photoshop Smock Tutorial

  3. Here we can make it look like smoke now. Go to \"filter\"/\"Distort\"/\"Wave.\" And make the settings as follows: - Generators \"5\" - Wavelength \"10\"/\"120\" - Amplitude \"5\"/\"35\" - Scale at \"100%\" for both.

  4. Right after you have used the \"wave\" filter you can go to \"Edit\"/\"Fade-Wave\" and set the opacity to \"50%.\" Now repeat this distort and fade method many times, or untill you think it looks best.

    Photoshop Smock Tutorial

  5. To make this effect look even better you may have to \"distort\", resize, and change the blending modes when fading a bit. And lastly, to make it different colors instead of the same throughout. make a new layer and use the \"brush\" tool all over the place using different colors. then set that layers \"blending mode\" to \"Overlay.\" And there you have it, a simple yet effective smoke method!

Top 10 Web Design Tips

  1. Keep content fresh. Perform monthly maintenance. Set calendar reminders for yourself to update time-sensitive pages like event calendars or posted
    deadlines.
  2. Use white space aesthetically. If your text is too dense, people won't read it. Bullet or number succinct bits of information.
  3. Keep graphics efficient. You may think your 200kb graphic is wonderful, but it will never show up on most users' screens (especially those on slower modems) as they just won't wait long enough to see it. Keep page sizes below 30k if you can (unless your graphics are the 'point' of the page).
  4. Keep your navigation really simple. Work out a consistent navigation style and stick with it. Try not to overload your pages with hundreds of choices that will confuse your visitors. Five to nine choices is the optimum.
  5. Use color to distinguish visited and unvisited links. Knowing where you've been is one of the basic features that all navigation designs should support.
  6. Always include contact information: phone, email.
  7. Test your pages by viewing them on multiple browsers and platforms. If possible, test it from your home computer.
  8. Test accessibility with the WebXACT Accessibility Checker. Always alt-text your graphics; see Accessibility Guidelines for instructions.
  9. Print your pages. Many of your users will print your pages for later reference. If it doesn't look right on paper, you're not done designing yet.
  10. Use the College's Style Guide - http://resources.css.edu/CollegeComm/docs/EditorialGuide.pdf
